| Nockers are the joy
of creation combined with frustrated perfectionism. The divine inspiration
of an inventor, and the unbridled annoyance when reality refuses
to live up to the image that inspiration was based on. They are the consummate
inventors of the fae, but are not generally popular with fae outside of
their kith due to a tendency to apply their perfectionism to other people
as well as their own creations. |
| Nockers
can create physical or chimerical machines to do almost anything anyone
might ever want done, but their creations tend to be so complicated that
no one else can even tell what they are for, let alone understand them
well enough to perform repairs. Seelie Nockers tend to work with traditional
technologies such as steam and straight mechanics, while Unseelie Nockers
are fascinated with modern technology. There are, of course, exceptions
to both rules. |
| Nockers have a shorthand
version of interaction in which creative cursing and insults are substituted
for all pleasantries. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to carry this
convention across into their relations with other Fae. A nocker will cheerfully
call someone the misbegotten child of a camel and a rotary wrench, and
be truly aghast when the individual gets upset. The nocker was only being
nice, after all. On the other hand, when a Nocker actually gets angry,
their vocabulary and experience in creating new phrases makes the resulting
expletives a wonder rivalling their inventions- if they aren't aimed at
you. |
| Nockers have an unrivaled
ability with machines. This is half knowledge, and half intimidation. Machines
know what a Nocker can do with a socket wrench and a magnetic screwdriver,
and would like to avoid that at all costs. A Nocker can literally scare
cranky machines into functioning properly. Their own creations, other than
being overly complex to most people's eyes, work perfectly to their specs.
Much to the frustration of the creators, however, Nocker creations are
always a little bit off in some not terribly significant way that annoys
the hell out of the Nocker who made it- "It's not supposed to ,
dammnit!"- but which does not interfere with the actual function of the
device. Some of the flaws are merely annoying, some make it more difficult
to use, and some are downright pains in the ass, but they are almost always
not on any of the characteristics the Nocker was paying attention to, which
keeps them very frustrated about that one thing they "forgot". They hold
themselves to just as high of standards as they hold everything else, and
missing those details gets on their nerves. |
